Who else is loving the extra sunshine and adventures that the summer brings!?
While we love our beach/river/pool outings around here, being pregnant or newly postpartum can certainly make it feel a bit harder!
Here are our top five tips for making summer outings safe and stress free:
Supply Bag
Depending on your location, supply needs will vary. However, there are a few standard items that most mothers of young children need-Diapers, wipes, snacks, drinks, and sunscreen and any specific medical supplies you might need.
It doesn't always make sense to bring the entire diaper bag, so we recommend keeping a water safe bag stocked in the home, ready to go! Not only will this make it easier to run out the door, but it will ensure you don't forget something absolutely crucial.
2. Shade
There are a million and one reasons to get plenty of sun exposure, but for babies and little ones, there can be too much of a good thing. Experts recommend using shade when possible and using hats/loose clothing to limit potential burns when in direct sun for long periods.
We love things like THIS that provide shade while also allowing for a breeze, and it's easy to carry.
3. Hydration Options
You know we are big fans of proper hydration. This is EXTRA important for moms who are pregnant during the summer, those who are nursing infants, and young babies. Infants especially are at risk of dehydration because of their small stomach sizes and how quickly they can empty. You should focus on getting both water and other hydrating options like herbal teas, coconut water, broths, and electrolyte drinks (such as LMNT or Liquid IV). ***If nursing infants under 6 months, do NOT give extra liquids outside of nursing and bottles. They will need extra milk, not extra water. All hydration needs should be met through their milk source. If in doubt, offer another bottle or the breast, and frequently. Think of it as a quick sip!***
4. Carriers
It may not be for everyone, but a good carrier can be a LIFE saver during beach and pool excursions, or really any adventure with your child(ren).
Not only does it free up your hands for carrying things, but it can also be a way to comfort and soothe a frazzled baby/toddler. Sometimes they just need some extra snuggles. With so many options available, we think it's worth trying a few styles until you find the perfect fit.
Most companies have great return policies, and if that's not a good option for you, ask a friend if you could borrow and try it out for a day or two. If you happen to be local to Richmond, VA, you can visit our office HERE and look through our carrier collection! We even include a few specific options-made with a sturdy mesh-specifically for babywearing in and around water.
5. Sense of Humor
After the diapers and wipes, a good attitude is probably the MOST IMPORTANT thing on this list. The reality is, going out with kiddos is always an adventure. It doesn't always feel worth the effort, and yes, it can be very challenging. However, your willingness to go, explore, experience, and learn alongside your children will not be wasted. And the more you practice, the easier it will get. From a team of seasoned moms (some of us have 40+ years of experience), we promise it's true.
If you have beach babies and want to share a tip or two, let us know blow! We all want to be able to enjoy outings with our little ones, and sharing practical advice like this can make it feel less daunting for others.
