Postpartum Day Shift?

What Does a Day Shift with a Postpartum Doula Look Like?

Have you ever wondered how a postpartum doula could support your family in those early weeks at home with your new baby?

Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day shift with a postpartum doula looks like.

You've Had the Baby—Now What?

We’ve already done our meet-and-greet, and now your little one has arrived! You're home and starting to settle in—and this is where we step in to help.

One of the first things we’ll do during a day shift is check in with you. How are you feeling? Have you had a chance to eat something nourishing today? How has baby been sleeping? What’s the feeding schedule looking like?

These early days can feel different every single time you wake up, and we’re here to adapt to whatever that day brings.

Maybe you need someone to talk to about your birth experience—someone outside your family who will listen without judgment. Or maybe you just want to hand the baby over, crawl into bed, and get some rest. That’s completely okay. Our goal is to be flexible and meet your family's unique needs.

Taking Over So You Can Recharge

Once we've caught up, we’ll usually offer to take the baby so you can get some much-needed downtime—whether that means a nap, a hot shower, or just a quiet moment to yourself.

While we’re caring for your little one—changing diapers, feeding a bottle, or gently rocking them to sleep—we’re also caring for you.

We’ll refill your water bottle (especially important if you’re breastfeeding), prepare a snack or heat up a meal from the fridge, and check in to make sure you're staying nourished and hydrated.

If there’s extra time, we might even help with meal prep—think chopping veggies or prepping ingredients for the crockpot—so dinner is one less thing on your plate.

When Baby Wakes

Eventually, baby will wake and likely be ready to nurse or have a bottle. After feeding, if they drift off again, we’ll take that opportunity to help around the house—folding laundry, tidying up the kitchen, or straightening the living room.

We want to leave your home a little lighter and leave you feeling more refreshed and supported than when we arrived.

Every Family Is Different—and That’s Okay

Whether you’re a first-time parent filled with questions, or you're welcoming baby number two (or three) and just need an extra set of hands, a postpartum doula is here to meet you where you are.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. While we may not have every single answer, we bring experience—and a strong community of birth and baby professionals we can consult on your behalf.

Real Stories, Real Support

One recent family we supported were brand-new parents who hired Richmond Birth and Baby because they wanted to watch and learn. We showed up, judgement-free, ready to walk alongside them. Over time, we watched their confidence grow—transforming from nervous first-timers afraid to dress their baby, to calm, capable parents who understood that they had the skill they needed to care for their little one!

That kind of transformation is why we do what we do.
